Thank you for your detailed response to my rather brief question.
About twenty years ago a friend, the composer Laurie Spiegel, was
consulting on data transmission for the Canadian phone company, and she hit
on idea of using a 16 bit code for the English language. This powerful
compression method was not used, despite its obvious utility. Now I read
that thirty years ago you advocated a much more comprehensive method of
encoding, and unlike her problem of convincing a single communications
company, you'll have to steer an entire population.
