Carlston co-founded Brøderbund Software, Inc. in 01980 with his brother Gary and served as both Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. His first exposure to computers came in the 01960s, when he was working as a programmer at Harvard's Aiken Computation laboratory. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 01970 and went on to study economics at Johns Hopkins School of Advance International Studies before entering Harvard Law School, where he received his JD in 01975.

Following the commercial success of his first two games, Galactic Empire and Galactic Trader, Carlston quit the practice of law to devote his energies to programming. In addition to the inherent responsibilities of his office, he continues to devote his attention to fostering the creative process behind Brøderbund's product development. Carlston serves on the Boards of several internet related companies and is the past president and chairman of the Software Publishers Association. He is a Trustee of the Santa Fe Institute and on the board of Public Radio International.
