The Long Now Weather Station:

In order to better understand the potential Long Now Clock Site we installed a weather station on the mountain in summer of 02001* with the generous support of The Mitchell Kapor Foundation. The current station uses a Zeno weather computer by Coastal Environmental Systems which they fitted with a Meteor Burst Radio System by Meteor Comm. The sensors and tower are by Texas Electronics. The power system uses two 32 watt Unisolar flexible photovoltaic panels charging six Lifeline SLA batteries with a Morningstar Charge Controller. For the first year we used a complete weather station by Texas Electronics including their Solus computer which we coupled with an analog cellular modem for communication. In September of 02002 we replaced the computer with the Zeno and the modem with the Meteor Burst Radio.

This project was implemented with a special use permit granted by the US Forest Service: Ely Ranger District. The project was conceived by Paul Saffo and implemented by Alexander Rose and Kurt Bollacker. We would like to thank the following people and agencies for their support and help with this project.

* The Long Now Foundation uses five digit dates, the extra zero is to solve the deca-millennium bug which will come into effect in about 8,000 years.
